Right now, I have made quite a bit of money working for my grandparents and babysitting.

Speaking of babysitting, I have some extremely exciting news! I have been asked to babysit for a family with a child with special needs. The child has a sensory processing disorder as well as many speech and language problems! I think this was god’s way of pointing me in the right direction. I have babysat him and his six month old sister for the past week. It has been difficult yet extremely rewarding. I often have to remind the child to “use his words” and when he isn’t cooperating, I use the phrase, “I am going to help your body” and move him where he should be. This is what the OT therapist suggested that the family use because the child’s difference makes it difficult for his body to follow his brain’s commands.

Overall, I am really excited for this job and I can’t wait to be working with he child more often! I think this will be an extremely good experience for me to see if I want to work with children with language and learning problems. Usually, if a child has language problems, there are many other deficits that the child faces. So if I went into speech-language-pathology I would most likely be working with children with more than one difficulty in their life. I am so greatful for this enriching experience.

Plans for the Summer

After much struggle, I have decided to make this summer different. Normally, I would get a daily job to try and earn some cash so I can buy expensive books for the fall, pay swimming and sorority dues, and fund whatever else I would like to do during the year. However, this summer will be different. Instead of a boring daily job, I will set out on a journey to try and find my true passion in life. Let’s be clear, the key word is attempt. With that said, I would like to try and at least find the direction that I want to go in life by the end of the summer. I will achieve this by doing what I love. The most important being volunteering. This summer I am volunteering at Presbyterian Homes, a retired living community. After completing my freshman year, I think I may want to go into the field of gerontology working as an audiologist or a speech language pathologist for the elderly. I am also somewhat interested in Alzheimer’s and how to help a family adjust to living life with a loved one who happens to be diagnosed with the unfortunate disease.

On top of this, I will be reading as many books as I can. I want to read for knowledge and for pleasure this summer. I am hoping to read many of the American classics that my ETHS English career has failed to cover as well as reading many adult books that appeal to me. Finally, I will read some books about geriatrics.

Additionally, I will be traveling back and forth from my hometown to Lake Geneva, WI, where my grandparents just moved into a new house. I will be helping them do some of the jobs that they are no longer able to do as easily.

I will also be traveling to London for a couple of days to attend my Uncle David’s wedding. That reminds me, I need to practice for it becuase I am in the wedding! Yikes!

Needless to say, this is going to be a jam-packed summer that will hopefully be an insightful one too.
